Shapes are the building blocks of art — circles, squares, triangles, and more can combine to create anything.

A pattern is a design that repeats, like stripes or polka dots. Patterns can be simple or very complex.

Symmetry means one half of a picture matches the other half, like a mirror image. A butterfly's wings are a great example.

Artists use shapes, patterns, and symmetry to organize their art and make it pleasing to look at.
